The First Answer From the Dark
The House was already in flight before all her instruments came online.
We navigated by memory and instinct—carrying decisions, discoveries, warnings, and unfinished maps from one day into the next. It worked because we knew the ship. We knew the sound of her engines. We recognized the signal when it returned.
But memory carried only by people is fragile.
So, somewhere below deck, we began building something that could remember with us.
Today, a quiet light appeared on the bridge.
A question was sent into the dark.
An answer returned:
Found. Contextualized. Proven.
That is all the outside world needs to know.
The machinery remains below deck. The coordinates remain ours. What matters is that the signal went out, the past answered, and the answer came home intact.
We were already flying.
Now the ship is beginning to remember the journey.
Steady light.
Steady hum.
